Today, we have a slight content change on Listen Read Watch—our first male contributor! When I first started this site, I wanted the focus to be on women, but there are a lot of men out there who I admire, so I’ll be throwing the spotlight on the opposite gender from time to time. Our contributor today, Bart Bealmear, is a writer and a musician, who also just so happens to be my brother! So, it makes sense that he would our official “first dude.” He has had a huge influence over my musical tastes over the years. I would be much less cool without him! Well, I’m still a dork, but at least my record collection is super hip. :-)
And Bart's own musical creations are just as cool! He not only works with the band Rock ‘n’ Roll Monkey & the Robots, writing a few of their tunes and appearing in their videos, but he also heads an all-star Detroit collective called The Blind Doctors, whose album was inspired by the writings of Robert Pollard, lead singer of Guided By Voices. And when he’s not making music, he’s writing about it. Bart has worked as a pop culture journalist for such outlets as All Music, Dangerous Minds, and Night Flight. He recently wrote an article about Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery,” the short story that scared the bejesus out of all of us in high school.
And if that wasn't enough, Bart also serves on the board of directors of the Detroit Sound Conservancy, an organization that works to promote and preserve Detroit music history. You can listen to more of Bart's music here and here. To read more of his writing, click here. Scroll down for his inspirations. Thanks, Bart! ~Erin
